Spain, a country surrounded by water
Spain is an ideal destination to enjoy the sea, waves and water sports. The peninsula is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Cantabrian Sea to the north and the Atlantic Ocean, which also bathes the Canary Islands. The sun shines for much of the year and many areas have perfect weather conditions for setting sail and enjoying the water.

Where to go sailing
The Mediterranean coast is the perfect destination to go sailing. In particular, the Balearic Islands are ideal during the months of May and October. Enjoy its turquoise waters, small coves hidden along the coastline, a generally calm sea, sunsets with spectacular views and all kinds of leisure and entertainment services. The Costa Tropical of Granada is also a good choice for sailing. It encompasses the Granada towns of Motril, Salobreña, Almuñécar and La Herradura. One of the most famous sailing routes along this coastline starts in the bay of La Herradura and goes all the way to the cliffs of Maro Cerro Gordo, in Malaga. Tenerife in the Canary Islands is another ideal sailing destination. Its strong winds and the available harbour and marina infrastructure facilitate sailing, and make it easy to have splendid experience on the water and under the sunshine.

Other activities and experiences to enjoy the sea
In addition to all the coasts for yachting and sailing, you can try other water sports in Spain:
Surfing
You can surf all year round in Spain, and you can do it at spectacular beaches that are famous among international surfers. If you are just starting out or want to get started, we recommend the spring and summer months. The coasts of Cantabria, Canary Islands, Basque Country and Cadiz are some of the most popular areas to have fun in the waves.
Diving
Spain’s coasts have a sea bed with a wide biodiversity of species. All kinds of recreational diving specialities are available for you to enjoy yourself. Any of the Canary Islands or Balearic Islands are perfect for scuba diving. Also famous are the areas of Cap de Creus and the Medas Islands in Catalonia; or the Columbretes and the island of Tabarca in the Valencia region.
Windsurfing
There is one place in Spain that stands out internationally as a windsurfing destination: the town of Tarifa, in Cadiz. They call it the “wind capital of Europe” because of its constant easterly or westerly wind which makes it a perfect place for this sport. The Canary Islands are another highlight. They’re known among enthusiasts as the “European Hawaii”.
